Mining that Preserves Ecology and Empowers People
At Bakobabs Investment Limited, we believe mineral exploitation must never occur at the expense of human safety or environmental integrity. Long-term commercial success in mining is inextricably linked to ethical operations, proactive hazard mitigation, and transparent relations with host communities.
In full accordance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007 and international ESG benchmarks, we design every concession operation from initial exploration through extraction and decommissioning with comprehensive environmental mitigation plans.
The Four Pillars of Responsible Mining
How we translate our corporate commitments into daily operational practices in the field.
1. Occupational Health & Workplace Safety
The health and safety of our workforce, field contractors, and site visitors is our highest priority. We enforce a strict "Zero Harm" operational culture across all pits, processing pads, and transit depots.
- Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Steel-toe boots, hard hats, safety goggles, and high-visibility vests required at all active worksites.
- Geotechnical Wall Stability: Daily inspection of open-pit benches and shaft walls by site supervisors to mitigate landslide or wall collapse risks.
- Equipment Pre-Shift Inspections: Routine mechanical audits on all heavy Caterpillar excavators, pumps, and transport trucks.
- Emergency Preparedness: On-site first-aid stations and designated medical evacuation protocols in collaboration with local healthcare facilities.
2. Water Stewardship & Tailings Containment
Water is a vital resource shared with local agrarian communities. Our mineral processing and alluvial washing operations are designed to conserve water and protect surrounding aquifers.
- Engineered Geomembrane Liners: High-density impermeable liners deployed beneath processing reservoirs and leaching pads to prevent soil seepage.
- Closed-Loop Water Recirculation: Process water is filtered through staged settling basins and recycled repeatedly, minimizing fresh water intake.
- Turbidity & Silt Control: Sediment traps and bunds prevent mining silt from entering natural watercourses or agricultural irrigation streams.
- Zero Chemical Effluent Discharge: Strict containment protocols ensuring local rivers remain clean and safe for downstream settlements.
3. Progressive Land Rehabilitation & Reclamation
We view extraction as an interim land use. Every concession development strategy includes a systematic closure and environmental restoration plan.
- Topsoil Preservation: Stripped fertile topsoil is carefully segregated and stored in stabilized berms for future land re-spreading.
- Concurrent Pit Backfilling: As mineral benches are depleted, overburden rock and gravel are backfilled to eliminate hazardous open voids.
- Grading & Contour Stabilization: Re-sculpting natural terrain slopes to prevent severe erosion and water runoff damage.
- Revegetation Programs: Replanting indigenous flora, trees, and pasture grasses to return lands to agricultural or ecological productivity.
4. Host Community Development & Local Content
Sustainable mining requires mutual prosperity. We work in respectful partnership with traditional councils, youth associations, and local leadership in Kwara and Kogi States.
- Signed Community Development Agreements (CDA): Legally formalized commitments to infrastructure improvements, educational support, and community stipends.
- Local Employment Priority: Over 80% of our general field personnel, equipment operators, and transport logistics teams are hired directly from host villages.
- Artisanal Miner Formalisation: Helping local miners transition from unsafe unregulated digging to structured, licensed cooperatives with fair pricing.
- Infrastructure Contributions: Grading rural farm access roads and supporting clean community drinking water boreholes.
Environmental Protection in Action
Direct visual records showing our containment pads, protective linings, and structured extraction workflows.
Geomembrane Containment
Multi-layer protective ground liners preventing any sub-surface mineral solution contact with native soils and aquifers.
Closed Water Circuits
Engineered settling drums and pump arrays facilitating clean water recycling without open water discharge.
Field Team Engagement
Regular on-site consultations involving our managing team, technical geologists, and local field operators.
